AUSTIN, Minn. – For many students, school lunch is the most nutritious meal they get each day. Sadly, many of those kids may go hungry when class isn’t in session.
That’s why the Austin Public School District has their Weekend Backpack Program. Each week, volunteers fill backpacks with food. On Fridays, the students take the backpacks home for the weekend.
“Poverty is just a major issue and we’re hoping that our backpack program helps kids to be able to go home on the weekend and have the confidence that they’ll have something to eat for sure,” said Dewey Schara, Principal of Neveln Elementary School.
The Weekend Backpack Program is made possible with help from the United Way of Mower County. To learn how you can participate in the program, contact the United Way of Mower County: http://uwmower.org/
