ZUMBROTA, Minn. – High water, mudslides, and downed trees are a few of the reasons for road and highway closures throughout the area.
In Zumbrota, Hwy 58 closed around 11:00 am Thursday due to flooding from the Zumbro River. MnDOT crews set up a detour for the road, which tends to be a main artery to the Redwing and Goodhue areas.
Mike Dougherty with MnDOT District 6 says they’ll be continuing to closely monitor waterways like the Zumbro River. They’re also looking at the Straight River in Owatonna along I-35 as well as the Austin area.
“Last night, we closed I-90 in Austin for a period of an hour and a half/two hours, then it went down but now we’re seeing the drainage come down as well as further south all the way to Charles City,” he explains.
If you are to come across a roadway that is covered by water and doesn’t have barricades or emergency crews, Dougherty says call law enforcement if you’re able.
“Often we know about it but sometimes the way these rivers rise and recede sometimes something happens that we’re not aware of because we’re focused on another area so the public can help out as well by just being attentive and reporting it.”
