MASON CITY, Iowa- The 10th Annual Out of the Darkness Walk was held at Southbridge Mall on Saturday.
The walk focuses on suicide prevention, bringing awareness to suicide and mental illnesses and creating a place where people bring light and talk about the issues.
More than 250 people registered for the event.
Derell Peckham said he participated in the walk for a family member. Peckham said he lost his cousin three years ago to suicide.
“I think something like this needs all the support it get,” said Peckham.” So other people know there are people out there to reach out for help, so somebody doesn’t get to that period where they feel like suicide is the solution.”
Out of the Darkness Walk chair Wendy Martinez said organizers have raised over $18,000. She said 50 percent of the money will be used for local use and the other half will be used for research.
