New therapy dog for those fighting addiction

MASON CITY, Iowa – A North Iowa organization has a new furry friend roaming the halls.

Prairie Ridge Integrated Behavioral Health Care in Mason City recently purchased a therapy dog named Buddy.

Originally a stray, those at Prairie Ridge got him through the organization Ultimate Canine out of Indiana. He is trained to be in a therapy setting to assist those battling addiction during their time of need.

“You know when people come in, they’re going to naturally have their barriers up, they’ve kind of been through things, they’ve been treated different ways by different people and that really helps to break that down,” says Mickey Johnston, lead clinical assistant.

Buddy has been with Prairie Ridge for about a month and patients say he is already making a positive impact.
