MASON CITY, Iowa- Iowa Governor Terry Branstad designated the first week of October as “Construction Week.” A week to raise awareness of the need for skilled workers in the construction field.
Those at Henkel Construction in Mason City say this is something they and many other construction companies are facing throughout the nation. The U.S. Bureau of Labor shows 20% of workers in the construction industry will be retiring in the next 10 years.
“It takes a lot of years to learn a skill,” says Kent Brcka “It takes around 5-10 years to get exposed to the different types of work we do. People can go to NIACC and get a degree, or we can train them onsite ourselves.”
Brcka says they do go schools around the North Iowa area to teach kids about the different jobs that are available.
