RICEVILLE, Iowa – The Iowa Department of Natural Resources is investigating a fish kill in Howard County.
It was reported September 28 on a tributary of the Wapsipinicon River about 2.5 miles south of Riceville.
On Monday, DNR field staff says they traced high ammonia levels in the creek to a farm field where waste product from Big Ox Energy of Riceville was applied to the land by Trent Linkenmeyer of Linkenmeyer Family Feeders.
The DNR says waste liquid was flowing from the field into the creek. Live fish were allegedly found above the field area and dead fish were below. An investigation continues, pending lab results on water samples.
According to the company website, “Big Ox Energy converts industrial food and agricultural waste into clean-burning, pipeline-grade, renewable natural gas.”
