Minute Pirate Bugs

KIMT News 3 – The leaves are changing, the weather is cooling down and some pesky black bugs are out in full force.

You’ve probably dealt with Minute Pirate Bugs already this year.  They’re sometimes nick named “no see ums.”  They’re mostly found around crops, gardens and trees.

Come fall, their food source which is other insects dies off, so they come hunting for your bare skin.

“They will land on you, they will puncture you with little, stout, short beaks and take a taste to see if you are any insect or insect egg,” Donald Lewis, an Entomology Professor at Iowa State University said.

They’re attracted to light colors.  Wearing dark colors while outside could help fend them off.
