ROCHESTER, Minn. – It’s an experience that has been compared to a restful night’s sleep.
“Floating” is gaining popularity across the country, and newly opened Nalu Float is the only place in the southeast Minnesota area where you can experience it.
Floating is where you enter a tank filled with 10 inches of water and around 800 pounds of epsom salt. That amount of salt allows the body to float effortlessly. The goal of floating, according to Nalu Float, is to enable profound relaxation through sensory deprivation. This is achieved by floating in the 93.5 degree water, which mirrors skin temperature, in the dark and complete silence.
“This allows the right brain to just kind of reset things and it starts to produce loads and loads of dopamine and serotonin and other really beneficial hormones — stress levels go down,” explains Nalu Float owner Jon Maki.
They offer 60- or 90-minute float sessions and Maki says the floaters have the option of having lights and music on during their sessions.
Besides a way to de-stress, relax and rejuvenate, he says floating can also ease discomfort of pregnancy, even symptoms of fibromyalgia. The magnesium in the salt can also act as an anti-inflammatory to aid in the recovery of athletes.
