MASON CITY, Iowa – Fall sports season is now well underway and while athletes need to work to avoid injury there’s something else to watch out for.
It’s common for athletes to catch skin infections during fall sports, especially football, and wrestling.
Emerlee Stilley, a nurse practioner with The Regency Clinic in Mason City says simple tips such as hand washing and keeping equipment clean will help prevent infections from spreading.
“Handwashing even during cold season is the biggest way to prevent any of these infections. We talk about cleaning equipment as well when you have clean equipment and not putting it into a dirty bag because then we’ve just contaminated it again,” says Stilley.
Stilley also recommends if athletes become diagnosed with a skin infection to step away from sports for a while to prevent spreading the infection.
