MASON CITY, Iowa – Grant funding is helping some local students discover their green thumbs.
Students and faculty from Hoover Elementary School took part in the Trees for Kids Planting Project.
The money comes from the Iowa Department of Natural Resources with the goal of involving students with planting trees on school grounds and other areas.
“The kids got a video from the Iowa DNR that they watch I believe in their class and shows them how to plant a tree correctly and water it and keep it in good shape,” says Bob Berggren, Mason City streets supervisor.
A planting demonstration was also provided by the city of Mason City.
About 50 students volunteered to help plant 28 trees and the school staff and city will come in and water the trees periodically.
