MASON CITY, Iowa- The YMCA in Mason City held their Big Blue 5K fundraiser on Sunday.
There were more than dozen people at the event. YMCA health, wellness & sports director Casey Curoe said the money raised will be used for upgrades in the fitness area.
“The weight area is kind of the area we’re focusing on and then eventually getting into cardio equipment for upstairs,” said Curoe. “As equipment goes, it gets a little bit older so it’s time for some freshening up there.”
Curoe said the Mason City YMCA location has over four thousand members. She said many people come for fitness purposes.
“It [the upgrades] will affect everybody,” said Curoe. “If they’re parents that drop of their kids to the youth programs, usually they use the facility upstairs to older adults to all ages.”
Dawn Chartier of Mason City said she and her husband take advantage of many of the services offered at the YMCA. She said going to the YMCA has become one of her favorite parts of the day and supports keeping the building updated.
“We take spin [class] up to three times a week, we’ve done the boot camp class, we’ve done the insanity class,” said Chartier. “It’s not uncommon for us to be here [YMCA] five times a week.
Chartier said because the YMCA is important to her, she wanted to participate in the Big Blue 5K fundraiser. “I think it’s really good for this community, by taking a role in it [fundraiser], it just contributes more and shows our love for the YMCA.”
