Man saved by kayaker after his sailboat overturned

ALBERT LEA, Minn.- Thanks to a kayaker, an Albert Lea man is alive after his sailboat overturned Sunday night. The incident happened on Fountain Lake.

51-year-old Jacqueline Carstens could hear 54-year-old Kris Springborg calling for help. It was then that she realized Springborg’s boat was flipped over and she paddled to him.

Cartsens was out earlier kayaking and left her boat in the water. She was able to help Springborg get safely back to shore.

He was wearing a life jacket and law enforcement wants to remind the public that they’re important at any age.

“The water temperatures have dropped tremendously and it doesn’t take long for hypothermia and then your body is going to lose all its function,” said JD Carlson, Deputy Director for Albert Lea Police Department. ‘So with a life jacket on, it’s going to prevent drowning.”

Springborg was transported to Mayo Clinic Health Systems – Albert Lea and is expected to make a full recovery.
