UPDATE: A 21-year-old Buffalo Center man died in a head-on crash on Monday afternoon despite wearing a seat belt.
According to an Iowa State Patrol crash report, 27-year-old Amy Kofron, of Forest City, was headed east on Highway 9 between Balsam and Cardinal Avenue in a Pontiac Grand Am while 21-year-old Breck Zittritsch, of Buffalo Center, was headed west in a 2006 Ford Mustang.
The report says Zittritsch crossed the centerline in a no-passing zone and Kofron’s Grand Am hit the Mustang in the front left quarter panel and driver’s side door, causing severe damage to both cars, which came to a rest about 1,079 feet west of Balsam Avenue on Highway 9.
Kofron was transported by Mercy Air Med for treatment. Two children in the car with her were also taken to Mercy Medical Center – North Iowa for treatment — Garrett Wilson, 2, and an infant, Chloe Wilson. That was after a passerby on his way to work pulled the children out of the car because he was afraid it would catch fire. Authorities used the jaws of life to free Kofron.
The children were treated and released and Kofron was transferred to another hospital.
