AUSTIN, Minn. – United Way of Mower County held their Annual Day of Caring on Saturday. Volunteers helped people in the community on projects that can require more than one person to complete.
Glorida Estrada of Austin participated in volunteering at the Catherwood Home Child Care project site. “It’s a Saturday morning, we don’t have school, why not [volunteer]!”
Estrada said the assignments the volunteers work on can be hard for businesses to fit into a busy work schedule, so she wanted to take part in event.
“They just asked us if we could clean their yard, the [deck] railing, if we could spray paint,” said Estrada. “We raked, pulled out weeds.”
Estrada said the people at Catherwood Home Child Care were very appreciative. “It’s just a beautiful thing helping others and then seeing how much you accomplished, seeing how clean it looks in the end.”
Gema Alvarado, executive director for the Parenting Resource Center that oversees Catherwood Home Child Care, said she is grateful for the nine volunteers that came out for the Day of Caring. “There’s these little projects that we have on our to-do list but we cant cross them off with our daily work,” said Alvarado. “Having these volunteers come and do it for us on a day like this, i’ts really meaningful to us.”
Alvarado said the high school and college volunteers also get a lot of out the opportunity, that will help them in the long run. “Preparing themselves for the work field, once they’re ready.”
