UPDATE: Victims identified in fatal Winneshiek County shooting

UPDATE: The Winneshiek County Sheriff’s Office has identified the victims of a deadly shooting that happened in Freeport on Sunday evening.

Around 6:30 p.m., authorities began receiving 911 calls reporting multiple shots fired in the area of Dogwood Road in Winneshiek County just outside of Decorah. The deputy on scene found two people dead with gunshot wounds at 2472 Dogwood Road.

Through the course of the investigation with the assistance of several local and state agencies, including the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation, the victims were identified as 55-year-old Craig Freilinger and 41-year-old Sarah Szabo, both of Decorah. Authorities say the two had been in a romantic relationship but were recently separated.

The bodies have been transported to the State Medical Examiner’s Office in Des Moines where an autopsy will be done.

Authorities aren’t looking for any other suspects at this time and have no reason to believe the public is in danger. No more information will be released until the autopsy is complete.

WINNESHIEK COUNTY- The Winneshiek County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a shooting that occurred in the Freeport area this evening. The Sheriff’s Office confirms that there are two deceased individuals.

At this time there is no reason to believe the public is in any danger. However, local and state agencies are investigating the crime scene. Authorities are encouraging residents to stay away from the area. This is an on-going investigation.
