GREENE, Iowa – Last month in Greene, residents received severe flood damage which was the result of heavy rains.
“We just have to be thankful that neither of us lost our lives, neither one of us have a terminal illness so everything that we lost is just material things that can be replaced,” says Audrey Smith.
Smith is the owner of Smith’s Etc. She suffered flood damage to her business and home with four feet of water on the main floor.
The Director of Emergency Management with Butler County says they are still waiting to hear about assessments of damages, but many homes were impacted.
“We have probably close to 500 homes that were affected whether it was just barely with a little water or major damage destroyed,” says Mitch Nordmeyer.
Audrey and her husband did not have flood insurance but were able to move into a new home two weeks after the flooding.
“It has been our home and it’s hard to leave it and we were hoping that maybe we do have some help from the government, but we haven’t heard anything yet.
“All three cities are talking about what they can do to try and minimize this the next time,” says Nordmeyer.
Audrey is currently waiting to hear from government agencies to see what they can do to assist.
