Group of Mayo food service workers votes to unionize

ROCHESTER, Minn. – A little more than 100 food service workers at Mayo Clinic have voted to become members of a union.

SEIU Healthcare Minnesota says about 89 percent of the votes cast in Tuesday’s election were to join up, with voting taking place over three shifts from 6 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.  In September, the workers filed to hold this election as Mayo moves to transfer all of its food services to an outside employer.

This group of workers is employed by Mayo’s current food service vendor Sodexo, and will now be represented by SEIU Health Care Minnesota as Mayo moves to switch those jobs and several hundred others to another company, Morrison Healthcare Food Services.
