ALBERT LEA, Minn. – With Election Day less than three weeks away, the campaign trail is heating up. Not just in the race for the White House, but also locally.
One of the most talked about contests in southern Minnesota is for the Minnesota House District 27A seat.
KIMT spoke to both Republican State Rep. Peggy Bennett and her DFL opponent Gary Schindler. They were both asked the same question: What are your priorities?
“I have some government reform ideas that I would try,” said Bennett. “Hopefully that will help with some of the gridlock and that kind of thing and make government more effective and transparent.”
“From what I’m hearing from people, the transportation plan is going to be critical,” said Schindler. “Recently I’ve heard that some of our communities have had to close down bridges within their township just because they aren’t safe.”
Schindler and Bennett are doing their best to get the word out about the issues that are important to them.
“I’ve really enjoyed getting out and hearing from people and learning from farmers, doctors and businesses about our area,” said Bennett. “I’ll take that information with me and also what I have learned the last two years about government process.”
“A critical piece is our bonding bill and from what I understand, that’s going to be a priority at the session anyways,” said Schindler. “It impacts us directly because we have a $7.4 million project for our Albert Lea campus at Riverland Community College.”
While they sit on opposite sides of the party line, they have something in common: The desire to do what’s best for the people of Minnesota.
“My favorite thing is people. I think people come before politics and before the game playing,” said Bennett. “It’s people that matter. To me it shouldn’t matter if an idea is Democrat or Republican. If it’s a good idea, let’s do it and if it’s a bad idea, let’s not.”
“The Transportation Plan and the Bonding Bill are going to increase employment in the state. So those will be my priorities from day one,” said Schindler.
