WINNESHIEK CO., Iowa – Investigators say the shooting in Freeport on Sunday evening has been ruled a murder-suicide.
The Winneshiek County Sheriff’s Office, with assistance from the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation, has concluded that evidence shows 41-year-old Sarah Szabo died from multiple gunshot wounds as a result of a homicide, and 55-year-old Craig Freilinger died from a single, self-inflicted gunshot wound, which he sustained after investigators say he shot Szabo.
Both victims were from Decorah and authorities say they had recently separated from a romantic relationship.
The investigation included autopsies by the state medical examiner in Des Moines, multiple search warrants, extensive interviews, neighborhood canvases and follow-ups on all evidence, tips, speculations, rumors and leads. A state crime lab team was engaged in processing the crime scene, including forensics and evidence collection.
Assisting agencies also included the Winneshiek County Attorney’s Office, Decorah Police Department, Calmar Police Department, Iowa State Patrol, Decorah Fire Department, Winneshiek County Emergency Management, Winneshiek Medical Center and Winneshiek County First Responders.
