CHARLES CITY, Iowa- The Charles City Police Department participated in National Prescription Take Back Day Saturday.
Charles City Police Officer William Vetter said it’s an effort to prevent pill abuse. He said their department will take expired, unused, unwanted pills all year around.
Vetter said it’s not safe to store medication in the bathroom. He said when you no longer use medications, you no longer monitor them. Vetter said to help prevent misuse of drugs, he recommends bringing in old medications.
“Once somebody gets addicted to something, it’s so hard to break that addiction,” said Vetter. “It’s so much easier to have it not available to begin with.”
Vetter said on average, the Charles City Police Department take in 100 pounds of medication on National Prescription Take Back Day. During the spring event, they took in 126 pounds, which is about five garbage bags of medications.
