KIMT News 3- A newly designated byway is being recognized in North Iowa by Governor Branstad and the Iowa Department of Transportation.
It’s the Jefferson Highway Heritage byway between Northwood and Lamoni, along US Highway’s 65 and 69. Iowa DOT field services coordinator Pete Hjelmstad said it’s a historic route that ran north to south across the country before the interstate system.
Hjelmstad said the recognition should help in tourism promotion efforts. “We will be getting signs, we will be working with a committee to help develop a logo for it, it will be on tourism maps now because it is designated as a national byway.”
The Iowa DOT is hoping to have the new signs installed along the routes by the 2018 tourist season.
