AUSTIN, Minn.- Dogs are known as man’s best friend and that’s especially true for a police K9 and his handler.
Austin Police Department’s K9, Sonic, is officially hanging up his service collar and retiring after five years on the job.
Lt. Matt Holten, Sonic’s handler, says he’s going to miss working with him each day. Over the course of five years on the job they’ve grown to be more than just partners.
Sonic has helped the department find people who were on the run and aided in narcotics searches.
“I’m going to miss just going to work with him every day,” said Holten. “I’ve been doing it for a long time and Sonic is actually my 5th dog. You really can’t beat the experience of bringing a dog to work.”
Those with the Austin Police Department raised money to purchase Sonic who will now live with Holten as his pet.
“It means a lot and I was kind of surprised,” said Holten. “The people I work with are awesome and I love working here. It was a very nice gesture on their part.”
