Changing the term hate crime

MASON CITY, Iowa – In the wake of what is happening between police officers and the public, some states are looking to broaden the term “hate crime.” Some groups are asking that police officers be included in the groups that are protected under the term hate crime.

Attorney Joel Yunek says in a case of first degree murder that type of law wouldn’t apply because a hate crime elevates the original crime and a first degree murder charge can’t be elevated.

“Hate crime is generally an elevation of a crime, so in other words if it’s a level D crime against a normal, so-called normal person, it goes up to a C crime,” Yunek said.
