One of the police officers killed early Wednesday had ties to North Iowa

DES MOINES, Iowa – One of the victims in the killing of two police officers in the Des Moines area has a connection to North Iowa.

Des Moines Police Sergeant Anthony “Tony” Beminio has been confirmed as the son of Belmond City Councilman and former Belmond Police Chief Frank Beminio.

Sgt. Beminio and Urbandale Police Officer Justin Martin were shot to death early Wednesday in what are being described as ambush-style attacks.

A suspect in the killings, Scott Michael Greene, has been arrested.

Simpson College has also released a statement saying both police officers graduated from that institution.  Beminio received a degree in criminal justice in 2001.  Martin graduated with the same degree in 2015.

“The loss of any police officer in such a senseless act of violence is a tragedy,” says Simpson President Jay Simmons.  “This is almost too much to bear.  We all extend out deepest sympathy to the families of Anthony and Justin.  We consider them part of our family, too.”

Members of the Simpson wrestling team will wear blue socks in honor of the fallen officers at their Thursday night meet at Cornell College.
