Disability workshops closing

HAMPTON, Iowa – For 40 years, Access Inc. has been providing workshops for those with disabilities, giving them a job to do during the day.

Now, that’s all changing.  New federal laws are requiring those in pre-vocational workshops to branch out more in the community.  Instead of working at places like Access, they’re being asked to find jobs elsewhere.  That means the workshops will be coming to an end in December.

“It’s definitely a sad day for a lot of the individuals that we serve.  Some of those individuals have been receiving services at the workshop for 40 years, but we definitely understand and support the new regulations and new requirements,” Jenny Backer, Executive Director with Access Inc. said.

Backer says their workshop currently serves 25 people.

Opportunity Village in Clear Lake will be closing their workshop next year. Their 80 clients will have to find volunteer work or jobs within the community.
