MASON CITY, Iowa – The Cerro Gordo County Courthouse was not only filled with voters on Tuesday morning at the polls, but also with those attending a special graduation.
Phillip Melby, who has struggled with substance abuse, graduated from the county Drug Court program where defendants complete treatment as part of their sentence.
Officials say Melby is a great example of why the program works.
“He has a grand total of 515 days of sobriety and that is a major accomplishment and we just want to recognize his changes that he’s made,” says Jodi Leal, Drug Court and federal clinician for Prairie Ridge Integrated Behavioral Healthcare
The average time a person spends in the program is 12 to 18 months.
