Steele County body identified as Albert Lea man


OWATONNA, Minn. – Authorities have identified the body found after a vehicle fire in rural Steele County.

Through an investigation and DNA evidence, the Steele County Sheriff’s Office says the victim was 64-year-old Herman Hernandez of Albert Lea.

On October 23 at around 6:30 pm, the Sheriff’s Office and the Owatonna Fire Department received what was described as a “suspicious” call in the 2000 block of NW 52nd Avenue.  They arrived to find a vehicle that had been on fire in a field and the body of a man inside.

The circumstances of Hernandez’ death are being investigated by the Steele County Sheriff’s Office, the Steele County Coroner’s Office, the Southern Minnesota Regional Medical Examiner’s Office – Mayo Clinic and the State Fire Marshal.

The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension Laboratory helped identify Hernandez.
