KIMT News 3 – Iowa’s state legislature saw quite a shakeup as Republicans gained the majority.
Now, GOP lawmakers hold the power in the Iowa House and Senate as well as the governor’s seat with the nation’s longest-serving governor, Terry Branstad.
State Rep. Josh Byrnes of Osage, who did not seek re-election, says Iowans could see some major changes.
“I’m a little bit more of a moderate when it comes to being a Republican and so I guess I hope they don’t think suddenly this is their free ticket to take on some of these social issues that maybe have passed,” Byrnes said.
Political analyst Bennett Smith says one reason many Republicans won was what he calls the “Trump effect” caused by Trump supporters who filled in the ovals for Republicans down the ballot.
