MASON CITY, Iowa – After being found competent to stand trial, a North Iowa man pleads guilty to burglary.
57-year-old Dale Elton Reese of Mason City was arrested on October 20, 2015, after getting into a standoff with police. Reese was accused of stealing cigarettes and assaulting a downstairs neighbor with a steak knife. The police department’s special operations unit eventually had to go in and take Reese into custody.
He was charged with 1st degree burglary and willful injury causing serious injury.
In March, Reese was evaluated and a judge ruled he was suffering from a mental disorder that prevented him from being prosecuted. That halted court proceedings until Reese was ruled competent to stand trial in July.
He then entered a guilty plea to 1st degree burglary and was sentenced Tuesday to 10 years in prison and ordered to pay a $1,000 fine. The willful injury charge was dismissed.
