CHARLES CITY, Iowa – Local students are working to make an impact in the community, thanks to several projects at school.
Eighth grade students at Charles City Middle School pitched their project idea, “Tomb It May Concern,” to the Riverside Cemetery Board.
The project will focus on a memorial for the kids who died of diphtheria, which was an outbreak that spread throughout town.
The kids are currently buried in unmarked graves at the cemetery, but students would like to provide them with a plaque that will explain the disease and honor the kids.
“They didn’t have a voice and when they got this disease they didn’t know what it was or how to cure it and I feel that doing this is giving them a voice,” says student Eliza Wolford.
The eighth grade students are currently working on a total of 22 projects.
