MASON CITY, Iowa- While over-the-counter medications are easy to access, usage should be monitored like any other kind of drug.
Hy-Vee Pharmacist Wendy Wolfe said over-the-counter pain relievers, such as Ibuprofen or Advil, are meant for short term use. She said long term usage should be monitored by a doctor to avoid problems.
“Ibuprofen can cause stomach issues, it can eventually go into an ulcer, which not everyone realizes. It can actually be a bleeding ulcer and sometimes people don’t have a lot of symptoms, so they might not even know it until something else happens and then they figure that out.”
Wolfe said it’s important for people to follow the directions on the box.
