INDIANOLA, Iowa – Scholarships are being established at Simpson College in memory of the two central Iowa police officers killed in early November.

Des Moines Police Sergeant Anthony Beminio and Urbandale Police Officer Justin Martin were ambushed on November 2 and shot to death in their squad cars.

Casey’s General Stores Inc. is now donating $50,000 to create scholarship funds in the name of each officer.  They both graduated from Simpson’s Criminal Justice Program.

“We believe it’s the right thing to do,” said Terry Handley, president and chief executive officer of Casey’s.  He is also a member of the Simpson Board of Trustees.

“This is such a thoughtful, generous act during a time of great sadness,” said Simpson President Jay Simmons.  “I can think of no better way to honor the lives of these two exemplary officers than to use the scholarship fund to help others in their pursuit of a great education.”

Scott Michael Greene is charged with two counts of 1st degree murder for allegedly killing Sgt. Beminio and Officer Martin.  He is being held on $10 million bond and has not yet entered a plea.
