MASON CITY, Iowa – An Iowa lawmaker is hoping to stop university time and money from being spent on those who are upset about the presidential election.
Lawmaker Bobby Kaufmann would like to see a bill called “suck it up, buttercup” passed. It proposes any state university using taxpayer dollars to fund election related sit-ins or grief counseling will receive a budget cut. North Iowa Area Community College Counselor Kay Long says her door is always open.
“Anytime a student is upset, not just with the election but just say life in general, is upset with some crisis that happened in their family, any kind of upset that’s affecting them as a student and their success, we would want to help them,” Long said.
The bill would also establish criminal penalties for those protesting, shutting down highways.
Iowa’s legislature goes back into session this January.
