The Great American Smokeout takes place Thursday

KIMT News 3-  The American Cancer Society Great American Smokeout event was held Thursday, a day to encourage smokers to quit or make a plan to quit smoking.

More than five thousand people die each year from smoking in Iowa, according to the Iowa Department of Public Health.

Leo Chisholm said he quit smoking years ago and has been an active member of the American Cancer Society. He said there are many methods out there to help people quit smoking but he believes cold turkey is the way to go.

“I think the biggest thing is will [power],” Chisholm said. “Just make up your mind that you’re going to quit. That’s it, just do it cold turkey.”

Chisholm said for smokers who have tried quitting several times in the past, he recommends trying group or individual counseling.
