MASON CITY, Iowa – Some residents in Mason City are on edge following a murder.
30-year-old Peter Veal is being held on a million bonds in the Cerro Gordo County jail. He’s charged with two counts of first-degree murder in the deaths of Melinda Kavars and Caleb Christensen. This comes after officers investigated three shots fired calls last month in the city, two of which left people injured. Police Chief Jeff Brinkley has a strong message for the community.
“If you know someone who’s dealing drugs, know someone who has a gun that’s not supposed to, you have information on human trafficking, information on counterfeiters, any kind of larger criminal element where there are kinds of problems tend to flow out of then if you’re not doing anything about it, you’re part of the problem,” Brinkley said.
Brinkley reminds the public that all of the cases were isolated incidents.
