MASON CITY, Iowa – It is global entrepreneur week – and North Iowa Area Community College is capping off the celebration with a marketplace. It’s a way for students and faculty to promote and sell their products.
One of those students is Samantha Schupanitz, who is getting a chance to promote her new business, selling sock monkeys, an idea she’s had since the third grade.
“I watched this movie called Mr. Magorium’s Wonder Emporium and it has a sock monkey and it was like a 30 second scene and I was like I am hooked on the sock monkey,” Schupanitz said.
Kaylee Martin is also new to entrepreneurship, having just started selling Mary Kay products four months ago and hopes to make it a full time career. She’s grateful NIACC is giving her an opportunity to grow her business.
“To me this is an opportunity to meet new people but also just to know that there’s somebody supporting you getting your feet wet when you’re starting your own business,” Martin said.
Samantha added onto her orders today, meaning she has 20 sock monkeys to make before Christmas. But for her the best part is handing them over once they’re done.
“I just like giving them to people because it’s so rewarding seeing them with this monkey that they wanted or personalized and it’s just, I do it for the customers,” Schupanitz said.
The Marketplace was open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday at the NIACC Activity Center.
