Watching out for animals at night

MASON CITY, Iowa – This time of year there are many dangers of driving including animals on the road. A recent video posted to Facebook from the Winneshiek County Sheriff’s Department from a deputy’s dashcam shows multiple animals crossing the road including deer, a skunk and a fox.

While avoiding the creatures can be difficult, there are precautions drivers should take.

“It’s always important to slow down because you can increase your reaction time that way,” Iowa State Trooper Brett Lewis said. “But this time of year when farmers are out in the fields deer are losing places to hide and also it’s the rut so they’re out on the move.”

Lewis says if you can, watch out for the shiny parts of the animal’s eyes in the dark.
