MASON CITY, Iowa- The sale of the St. Ansgar old elementary school is being postponed. Businesses interested buying the building must submit a proposal by Dec. 2.
St. Ansgar Economic Development Council has offered to buy the empty lot, once the building was demolished, to divide land up into lots and sell for housing.
St. Ansgar Superintendent Jody Gray says because of community support, the school board extended the deadline for additional proposals, some that would keep the building standing.
“It was no longer viable for us as an elementary building,” said Gray. “But if other people have uses for it, they have to have the financial backing that if for some reason it wouldn’t work, how would they take care of this building.”
