MASON CITY, Iowa – A staff member’s retirement is spurring a special work session for Mason City leaders.

The City Council will meet to discuss the Neighborhood Service and Transit position currently held by Pat Otto, who’s retiring at the end of the year.

According to city officials, Otto may be the only part-time transit manager in the state of Iowa. Aside from her transit duties, she also manages Animal Control, Animal Shelter, Code Enforcement and Housing Inspection function. City leaders say because of Otto’s unique skill set and job responsibilities, they are re-evaluating the position to best serve the community.

“We needed to do some reclassifications of positions within the department so that we would be able to give transit the amount of attention that it needs,” says director of Development Services Steven Van Steenhuyse.

Steenhuyse will take over as interim transit and safety manager until the position is filled.
