CHARLES CITY, Iowa – Fifth graders at Charles City Middle School had a chance to combine a math lesson with a good deed Wednesday. It’s called “Gobble Gobble Pennies” and students have been bringing in change for the last week and then they count the money.
The program started 10 years ago and every $30 pays for a meal for one student’s family on Thanksgiving. And for the students, it’s more than just a math lesson.
“We’re going to figure out how many families we can feed with the money so then we’re also doing life skills, counting the change, working with money and then also just giving back,” teacher Laura Walker said.
After all that counting, students raised about $500.
