MASON CITY, Iowa- It’s a tradition in many households to put up the Christmas tree and lights after Thanksgiving dinner.
Mason City Fire Department captain Dick Paulson said it’s important to make sure you’re putting lights up safely. he said older bulbs produce a lot of heat, so keep lights off the carpet when making sure all lights glow.
Paulson said before plugging light lines in an outlet, make sure to check the wiring. “If you see exposed wires,” said Paulson. “Do not use those lines. throw them away and buy new ones.”
Paulson said people looking to buy Christmas lights, he recommends looking into LED light bulbs. He said they produce the least amount of heat, last the longest and are energy effective.
