BUFFALO CENTER, Iowa – Two people are arrested after a reported child abduction in North Iowa. According to the Iowa Department of Public Safety, on Wednesday at 4:25 p.m., the Buffalo Center Chief of Police was alerted by a motorist about suspicious activity near the 400 block of Second Street Northwest. A man and woman were seen leaving with two small children.
The Buffalo Center Police Department and the Winnebago County Sheriff’s office investigated. A babysitter told law enforcement that the two children, ages three and one, were taken by an unknown male and the children’s biological mother, Ashley Machain, who was supposedly armed with a knife.
Law enforcement began searching for the silver SUV they were last seen in. At 2:25 Thursday morning, the children were recovered safely in Fort Dodge. Machain and her alleged accomplice, Daniel Smith were taken into custody.
We’re told Machain is being held in Kossuth County Jail because Winnebago County is at full capacity. She is being charged with second degree burglary and child endangerment. Smith is being held in Winnebago County Jail. He is charged with second degree burglary and driving while barred.
