MASON CITY, Iowa – The day after Black Friday has become important for many small businesses, including Lucy & Olive in Mason City. The business hosted an open house on Saturday to coincide with Small Business Saturday.
Store owner Brenda Jacobs says the crowds of people actually started coming in on Friday and at times it was extremely hectic, but she says she’s thankful for the community’s support. She says shopping at small businesses offers customers a different feel.
“You can go into a store, you can find unique things that you’re not gonna find at a big box store,” Jacobs said. “And you know, we all shop big box stores, myself included, but you know we try and offer an experience and just finding something you’re not gonna find somewhere else.”
According to American Express, which launched the idea of Small Business Saturday in 2010, 112 million people came out in support of the day.
