KIMT News 3- Many people working retail this holiday season are going to spend a lot of time on their feet. According to local doctors, that could lead to some medical conditions.
Dr. Ali Mardan, who studies vascular medicine at Mercy Medical Center North Iowa, says that those who spend too much time on their feet or a long period of time sitting put themselves at risk of varicose veins. He says the body of those suffering from varicose veins have a difficult time moving blood from the legs back to the heart which could create swelling of the feet, ankles or other parts of the body.
Dr. Mardan says he has diagnosed patients even under the age of 18 with the beginning stages of varicose veins, but there are way to prevent the issue.
“I highly recommend people take weight preventative measures, use compression stockings, and start exercising,” Dr. Mardan says. “This will prevent people from having to have more aggressive measures taken like surgery.”
