UPDATE: A family member says the woman shot early Friday morning in Mason City has died.
Her brother says 19-year-old Samantha Teeter passed away around 4 p.m. Sunday at Mayo Clinic of cardiac failure. She donated her liver and two kidneys.
The Mason City Police Department says the charge against Larry Whaley has been upgraded to first-degree murder. He remains in the Cerro Gordo County Jail on a $500,000 bond.
UPDATE: The Mason City Police Department says 60-year-old Larry Donnell Whaley of Mason City is being charged with attempted murder for the shooting near Lincoln Intermediate School. He is being held in the Cerro Gordo County Jail on a $100,000 bond.
Authorities say the shooting happened at Whaley’s home and that he and the victim knew each other.
MASON CITY, Iowa – Mason City police say they are investigating an early morning shooting that left a 19-year-old woman with a serious gunshot wound.
Officers received a call around 4 a.m. Friday in regards to a domestic. Sgt. Mike Lillquist says when they arrived at 116 17th St. SE, they found one woman suffering serious injuries. Three have been taken into custody and are being questioned. A person of interest has been identified.
The woman was taken to Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa by the Mason City Fire Department. She has since been airlifted to Mayo Clinic.
Lillquist says where it happened is an apartment complex and they are questioning those inside at this time. Police say the area is secure and the shooting was contained in the apartment.
Officers ask parents, students and staff to be aware that roads near Lincoln Intermediate School may be blocked due to the investigation. The incident may affect school drop-offs and bus routes on Friday morning. Police ask that you avoid 17th St. SE if possible.
Anyone with information about the incident is encouraged to call the Mason City Police Department at 641-421-3636 and ask for the Criminal Investigations Division.
Police were also assisted by the Cerro Gordo County Sheriff’s Office.
