ROCHESTER, Minn. – Channel One Regional Food Bank recently received a grant of nearly $11,000 from the Red Nose Day Fund to provide over 150 backpacks of food for area students each weekend through the school year.
The Red Nose campaign helps raise awareness and funds to help children in need. It addresses those needs by making grants to organizations to keep kids safe, healthy and educated. Participants were able to buy a red nose at Walgreens stores on May 26 for Red Nose Day. Funds raised help local organizations like Channel One.
“We are very grateful for the Red Nose Day Fund grant. This grant will allow us to purchase food that we will distribute to children in need in our community through the Channel One Backpack Program. The backpack program provides food for kids in need on the weekends during the school year. Without proper nutrition, these children cannot learn and grow. Thank you so much, ” said Jennifer Woodford, Channel One’s executive director, in a news release.
The backpack program serves 22 schools in Olmsted County and reaches about 1,000 students. During the last budget year, 121,780 pounds of food were distributed through the program.
