MASON CITY, Iowa – A coin with a storied past will be auctioned off Saturday at Southbridge Mall with all the proceeds going to the Salvation Army.
The auction is known as the “Tom Fretty Memorial Krugerrand Auction.” On multiple occasions, donor Tom Fretty would buy the krugerrand coin during the auction and then give it back to be auctioned off again later that same day. Now that Fretty has passed, it is left up to the person who buys the coin this year to keep the tradition.
“We may not always have that, this year may be the last year but hopefully somebody else gives us a krugerrand and we’ll be able to continue this in his honor,” Captain Janelle Cleaveland said.
This will be Cleaveland’s first year participating in the auction.
The event starts at 11 Saturday morning.
