For this one, we’re taking you back to February when an unintentional discovery in a Mayo Clinic lab shed light on a new species that causes Lyme disease. From what researchers can tell, Borrelia mayonii, the new species, only exists in Minnesota and Wisconsin.
Up until this discovery, it was believed that only one type of bacteria, Borrelia burgdorferi, caused Lyme disease in North America.
