CERRO GORDO COUNTY, Iowa – A traffic stop early Saturday morning allegedly turned into a fight and then a high speed chase in North Iowa.
The Cerro Gordo County Sheriff’s Office says around 1:12 am, a deputy stopped a vehicle for speeding on Highway 122 near the intersection with S Iowa Avenue. The driver of the vehicle was identified as 28-year-old Joseph Anthony Porcelli of Rock Falls.
A search of the car allegedly found some drugs and the deputy tried to arrest Porcelli. The Sheriff’s Office says there was a struggle and Porcelli got back into his vehicle and drove off, leading to a chase that reached speeds of 90 miles an hour.
The pursuit went east on Highway 122, north on Vine Avenue into Rock Falls and then continued north on Nottingham Street. Porcelli then allegedly stopped the vehicle and tried to flee on foot, but was arrested a short distance away after another alleged fight with law enforcement.
The Sheriff’s Office says a deputy suffered minor injuries in this incident and all illegal drugs were seized.
Porcelli is charged with eluding a law enforcement vehicle, possession of a controlled substance, assault on a peace officer causing bodily injury and interference with official acts. He is being held in the Cerro Gordo County Jail on $5,000 bond.
The Mason City Police Department assisted in this arrest.
