MASON CITY, Iowa – The Tom Fretty Memorial Kregerrand Auction was held at Southbridge Mall.
Over the years, donor Tom Fretty would buy the Krugerrand Coin during the auction and then give it back to be auctioned off again later that same day.
Now that Fretty has passed, it is left up to the person who buys the coin this year to keep that tradition going.
Joel Showalter, owner of Window World in Mason City, made the generous purchase.
“So it’s important for me to bring my family here and show the kids that giving back is great, especially around the holiday season, and my kids bought something just for a great cause that is the Salvation Army, so we’re just pleased to do it — we love to give back to North Iowa.”
A total of $8,795 was raised at the auction.
